One of the newest Olympic sports will be on show on the Sunshine Coast this week with some of the world’s best women’s lacrosse team competing in world championship qualifiers.

Lacrosse Australia chair Abbie Burgess-Brice said the region’s best would compete at Asia-Pacific Women’s Lacrosse Championships, to be held at the Kawana Sports Precinct.

Ms Burgess-Brice said Australia, the 4th ranked team in the world, would be joined by Japan (5), New Zealand (12), Hong Kong, China (16), China (19), Korea (21), as well as newcomers Chinese Taipei and the Philippines, at the event, which runs until Saturday (Jan 11).

She said excitement was at an all-time high in the sport, after lacrosse’s recent inclusion as an Olympic sport.

“Australia is expecting to be right in the media mix when the sport debuts at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.”

Ms Burgess-Brice said the Asia-Pacific event, which also acted as World Championship qualifiers, was an important milestone for lacrosse in the region.

“This event highlights our commitment to growing lacrosse and providing a platform for excellence at the highest level now that we are in the Olympic era.

“This is an incredible opportunity to showcase Australian talent, connect with the global lacrosse community, and inspire the next generation of players across Australia.”
