Planned big battery storage has almost doubled in capacity in 12 months, according to analysis by the Climate Council.
Climate Councillor and energy expert Greg Bourne said there were more than 20 gigawatts of big battery storage in the pipeline.
“This is almost double what as planned just a year ago,” Mr Bourne said.
He said the latest research, which accompanied the release of a new report, also found one in two Australians were seeking to install a household battery alongside a new or existing rooftop solar.
“This comes just before the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program kicks off on July 1.”
Mr Bourne said more than 300,000 households had added a battery since coming onto the market in 2015.
“Adding two million household batteries would collectively save Australians more than $4 billion a year on their power bills.”
He said around 40 percent of our main energy grid was powered by sun and wind and batteries were the bridge to a 21st century energy grid.
“We already generate an excess of clean, reliable, renewable energy from Australia’s abundant sun and wind.
“Rather than simply letting it go to waste and missing out on the savings, batteries will help soak it all up and put it to good use during periods of high demand.”
