Queensland beaches will be under the watch of lifesavers for at least another decade following a $125 million funding announcement.
With the current four-year funding agreement with the State Government set to expire in June, a new long-term deal provides certainty for Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ).
SLSQ CEO Dave Whimpey said the 10-year funding agreement provided security and sustainability so lifesavers “could focus on doing what they do best – saving lives”.
“Every surf club in Queensland will benefit from this record investment in surf life saving,” Mr Whimpey said.
State Minister for Community Safety Mark Ryan said the first round of funding had been issued.
“The first round of funds range from $22,500 to $82,000 and are part of $12 million in funding this financial year,” Minister Ryan said
He said each club had specific needs and would use the funds accordingly.
“In addition to the individual club funding, Surf Life Saving Queensland has advised that nearly $10 million of this financial year’s funding package will be directed to significant capital works programs.”
Minister Ryan said the $125m investment was the biggest in the nation and built on the current four-year $30 million commitment.
