Weekly use of generative AI has almost doubled in 12 months, with only 10 percent of people now saying they are unaware of the technology.

A survey by the Reuters Institute, across six key countries, found awareness and use of Gen AI tools, such as ChatGPT, had surged.

It its report, the UK-based think tank stated the proportion of respondents from those surveyed in Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, the UK and the US, who said they have ever used a standalone generative AI system jumped from 40 percent to 61 percent from 2024 to 2025.

It stated weekly usage nearly doubled from 18 percent to 34 percent.

“ChatGPT is the single most popular AI system with 22 percent weekly usage, though adoption varies significantly by age.”

It found information-seeking had become the primary use-case for AI, more than doubling to 24 percent weekly usage and surpassing media creation, while specialised uses like news consumption remain limited at 6 percent.

“Trust is concentrated among major brands, with ChatGPT leading the field again, though most users remain occasional rather than regular adopters.”

The study found the share of people across countries who had heard of at least one of 13 AI tools rose from 78 percent (2024) to 90 percent (2025).

“Only 10 percent say they have heard of none.”

It found the use of generative AI skewed younger, with 59 percent in the 18–24 category stating they used generative AI in the last week, as opposed to 20 percent among those aged 55 and over.
