The Queensland Government has pulled the pin on Stage 4 of the Gold Coast Light Rail project.

Deputy Premier and State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Jarrod Bleijie said following a review of the proposed link from Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta there would be a strategic shift towards direct bus service enhancements.

Deputy Premier Bleijie said the Department of Transport and Main Roads would also undertake a multi-modal transport study for the Gold Coast region.

He said the study will explore broader regional transport needs, including airport connectivity and alternative routes.

“(The decision) follows extensive community consultation with over 5600 submissions revealing a strong desire for cost-effective, flexible transport options that respect the natural environment and protect key local landmarks like Burleigh Head National Park and Tallebudgera Creek.”

Deputy Premier Bleijie said nearly two thirds of respondents to the consultation expressed negative sentiment towards the project, while there was a risk of further time and cost blowouts, with the project potentially costing up to $9.85 billion.
