Almost one in five Australians are planning to visit a Queensland destination during the upcoming Easter holiday period.
Figures released today by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) show the state tops the list for intended travel for the period.
Around 18 percent of Australians intended to visit a Queensland destination.
This was followed by Victoria (12 percent), New South Wales (11 percent), South Australia (six percent), Western Australia (five percent), Northern Territory (three percent) and Tasmania (three percent).
TEQ said one in five residents from New South Wales said they were intending to visit Queensland for at least one night, followed by one in 10 Victorians.
The Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast were the most popular destinations.
Road travel was becoming more common with 49 percent of prospective visitors intending to travel by car on their trip.
The figures showed that 35 percent of people planning to travel to Queensland would be travelling with children, 31 percent as a couple and 22 percent solo.
More than 60 percent of those intending to visit said they would spend more than $1000 on their trip.
Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell said the survey was great news after a tough start to the year with natural disasters.
“Queensland is open for business and our tourism operators are gearing up for a busy Easter holiday period,” he said.
Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Craig Davidson said the new data was an encouraging sign.
“While Outback Queensland is dealing with a weather event, we know they will bounce back quickly,” he said.
