South Brisbane’s riverfront will undergo a “once-in-a-generation” redevelopment with 4000 homes and 1.2 hectares of public open space to be developed by Lendlease.
The area will span 7.1 hectares and include new riverfront promenades and boardwalks, plazas and amphitheatre-style spaces, parkland and shared pedestrian and cycling routes.
The transformation of the former Visy glass recycling and manufacturing site is expected to commence in April 2027.
Located 1.3 km from the Brisbane CBD between South Bank and West End, the site is one of Brisbane’s last remaining industrial riverfront areas.
The project is expected to support around 2100 jobs per year during construction and around 1000 ongoing jobs once completed, according to a Queensland Government statement.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said the precinct was a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity to reshape a significant slice of Brisbane and deliver a lasting legacy.
Lendlease Development CEO Claire Johnston said the transformation provided a rare opportunity to “reimagine” Brisbane’s riverfront.
Business South Bank CEO Janine Watson welcomed the decision to offer the site to a single proponent.
“This is one of the most important urban renewal opportunities in inner Brisbane, and it needs to be approached with the care and ambition that a site of this significance deserves,” Ms Watson said.
“As more residents, workers, and visitors are welcomed into this part of the city, it will be essential that supporting infrastructure keeps pace.
“That includes public transport, school capacity, walking and cycling connections, green and open space, and the social and cultural infrastructure needed to support a complete community.”
Planning and pre-development activities will continue ahead of the site handover, and the community will have the opportunity to have their say on the proposed masterplan in early 2027.
