The largest proposed new hotel between Brisbane and Cairns has been given the green light after developers reduced the height of the complex by three stories.

Fraser Coast Regional Council approved the five-star Sheraton Resort Hervey Bay after developer Sunny Beach Land agreed to reduce the project height from 21 to 18 storeys.

The complex, to be built on the southern Queensland coastal town’s esplanade, will include more than 200 hotel rooms and 340 residential apartments.

Council said approval for the $450 million complex, which was carried six votes to five, was subject to a range of development conditions, including a lapse of the six-year development permit if the development was not completed within 10 years.

Sunny Beach Land director Dan Cuda said the approval was the trigger for a major economic, employment and social boost for the Fraser Coast region.

“While we understand and appreciate that not everyone was in favour of this proposal, we are very grateful for the overwhelming feedback received and thank everyone for their interest in the project and their willingness to participate in the discussion,” Mr Cuda said.

“We are committed to seeing this project through and creating a landmark development that will put our region on the world stage today and for future generations.”

Mr Cuda said Sunny Beach Land would review Council’s approval conditions and actively commence planning for the project’s commencement.
