More than half of Australians are considering switching to electronic cars off the back the latest spike in fuel prices.
Price comparison company Compare the Market released a survey today showing 54 percent of people were considering the switch.
Compare the Market spokesman Henry Man said the survey involved a nationally representative sample of 908 Australians in March 2025.
Findings included:
- 24.9 percent said they want to switch to an EV even more than before
- 6.8 percent now want to switch to an EV for the first time
- 22.5 percent want to switch to a more fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle
- 45.8 percent intend to stay driving a petrol or diesel vehicle
“The conflict in the Middle East is sparking more interest in full electric vehicles, with nearly one-in-three Aussies looking to make the switch, to curb rising fuel costs,” Mr Man said.
“Just over one-in-five said they would prefer to buy a hybrid model to cut their fuel expenses while 45 percent of drivers surveyed want to stick with a conventional petrol or diesel vehicle.
“It looks like that fuel prices will continue to be volatile in the coming months, and these record prices could become the ‘new normal’.”
According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, petrol prices increased by about 40 cents a litre over the past week.
