The first Australian narrative feature film to shoot in Antarctica will share in more than $12 million worth of funding for new local programs.

Screen Australia will invest $12.8 million across 46 narrative projects which provide distinctive perspectives with local and global appeal.

Screen Australia Director of Narrative Content Louise Gough said among the projects supported was director Rob Connolly’s Shiver.

Ms Gough said the production was an adaptation of Nikki Gemmell’s acclaimed novel and “follows the profound transformation of a young journalist as she ventures into the vast, fragile wilderness of Antarctica”.

Shiver will be the first Australian narrative feature to be filmed in Antarctica.”

She said it would be produced by Liz Kearney (Memoir of a Snail) and Kate Laurie (Petrol) alongside Connolly.

Ms Gough said the backed projects showcased the originality and ingenuity of Australia’s creative talent, with bold stories and major co-productions created for a range of audiences.

“We know Australian stories are in demand across the world and in our own backyard, and Screen Australia is uniquely positioned to support the tapestry of voices that celebrate and speak to our multi-faceted, diverse community,” she said.

“Local stories are resonant because they are beautifully particular yet underpinned by universal themes that all viewers can relate to.”
