Pompeii – a once-thriving Roman city preserved forever under molten ash is the subject of a new exhibition at the Home of the Arts (HOTA) on the Gold Coast.

Acclaimed Italian artist and photographer Luigi Spina has captured evocative details of the intact buildings from homes, to shops and artifacts during the COVID19 pandemic which was closed to the public at the time.

Titled Inside Pompeii: Origins of a European Way of Life, it offers unique insight into one of history’s most extraordinary archaeological sites, Experience Gold Coast Head of Arts and Culture Yamila Alfonzetti said.

“These photographs are both quiet and monumental, offering moments of reflection that resonate long after you leave the Gallery,” Ms Alfonzetti said in a statement.

Spina used a purpose-built camera designed to capture images only in natural light, resulting in more than 1,450 photos.

The exhibit is on until May 31 from 10am-4pm. Entry is free.
