MJ The Musical, which showcases the life and music of Michael Jackson, has finished its Australian run – attracting an audience of 875,000 across four cities.

The show’s 67-week run took in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

The Australian season brings the global audience for MJ The Musical to more than seven million since its 2022 debut.

It was part of a major Michael Jackson revival in 2026, which included a record-breaking bio-pic movie and several touring tribute shows.

In a statement released today, the Michael Cassel Group said MJ The Musical had provided employment for 290 Australians across performing, creative and technical roles.

“The touring company of 72 full-time members was joined by 42 local musicians and more than 400 local staff across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth, delivering 532 electrifying performances,” the group said.

“Beyond the company itself, the production also supported more than 200 additional Australians through businesses supplying specialist equipment and services.

“(This included) freight, scenic, construction, marketing, publicity, media buying, physiotherapy and psychology, making a significant contribution to local cities and economies.”

The cast was led by Broadway performer Ilario Grant in the title role and marked the professional stage debut of Brisbane performer Liam Damons.

Liam was joined by company members Albanus Terry Strickland II, Beth Appiah Cain, Ceeko, Iris Wei, Liam Costello, and Xavier Gibson.

The musical also marked the professional debuts of Kayleb Alese, Blaiyze Barksdale, Gebriel Batchelor Walters, Ben Bonner, Daniel Makunike, Zavier Pillay, Kael Smith and Lucas Wyllie.

Australian producer Michael Cassel said he was immensely proud of what the company had achieved together and grateful to everyone who played a part in making the tour such a remarkable experience.

Original Broadway producer Lia Vollack said Australia had become a special chapter in the global journey of the musical.

“Beyond the warmth of Australian audiences, we’ve had the privilege of working with an exceptional company of performers, musicians, crew and creatives who have brought this production to life with extraordinary talent, passion and heart,” she said.

“We couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved together.”
