Queensland Ballet will debut an innovative contemporary dance experience set to the music of pop icon Sia on the Gold Coast.

Elastic Hearts will feature the music of Australian chart-topping performer Sia as part of the ballet company’s push towards engaging with audiences outside of Brisbane.

Choreographed and directed by Garry Stewart, the ballet will explore themes of vulnerability, resilience, and connection – with Sia’s music performed and recorded by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Sia said she was thrilled her music would feature as the soundtrack and emotional catalyst to a new ballet.

“I’ve always believed in the power of movement and music to connect people on a deeper emotional level,” she said.

“To see my music reimagined through the beauty of ballet is something truly special.”

Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Ivan Gill-Ortega said they had formed a three-year collaboration with HOTA, with Elastic Hearts the first of three new ballets to be premiered there.

“Queensland Ballet has had a long-held wish to call the Gold Coast home,” Mr Gill-Ortega said.

“This production is the perfect launch of our new partnership, as it stretches the boundaries of what ballet can be – emotionally, musically, and culturally.

“With Sia’s music as our heartbeat in this first work, we’re diving into something raw, contemporary, and full of feeling, and the Gold Coast, with its vibrant energy and creative pulse, is the perfect place to launch.”

HOTA head of Arts and Culture Yarmila Alfonzetti said Elastic Hearts was exactly the kind of work that belonged at the venue – “fearless, emotional, and made for now.”

Queensland Ballet Executive Director Dilshani Weerasinghe said the HOTA partnership would act as a launchpad to enable new works to premiere outside of Brisbane and become tour-ready for audiences across the state.

Elastic Hearts will premiere with four performances at HOTA from November 6-8. For tickets visit HOTA.
