The first production to be performed at QPAC’s new Glasshouse theatre – Messa da Requiem – will open tomorrow night on March 27, 2026.
Queensland Ballet’s staging of Giuseppe Verdi’s intense musical set at a “requiem” or funeral mass has been hailed as a compete work of art because it combines 36 dancers, 110 opera singers and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
The epic production by acclaimed German choreographer Christian Spuck explores the themes of death, terror, judgment and the more subdued moments of final peace.
The music was first composed in memory of Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni who was admired by Verdi.
Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Ivan Gil-Ortega said the ballet was a masterpiece.
“It is powerful, profoundly moving, and speaks directly to the heart,” Mr Gil-Ortega said.
“I felt this was the right way to begin my journey and this new chapter here at Queensland Ballet.
“I have known Christian Spuck for over 30 years and we share a deep artistic trust and understanding.
“To bring one of his most significant works to Brisbane to open my first season feels both personal and symbolic.
“With our opening weekend sold out, I couldn’t think of a more exhilarating way to open our 2026 season.”
