“I gotta focus. I’m shifting into soup mode.”
There is some good news for Seinfeld fans struggling to make sense of the 21st century.
Jason Alexander, who played the iconic George Costanza character in the 1990s comedy, has announced he is writing a book as his old character.
Alexander told a podcast in the US that the book would be written entirely “in the voice of George”.
It will be “George’s speculation on things that have happened over the last 25 years.”
Alexander told the podcast that the idea had been pitched to him and he hoped to have it released for the “next Festivus” (which could mean as early as the end of the year).
He has also alluded to some legal hurdles that might need to be overcome for the book to meet official Seinfeld status.
The George Costanza character was based on one of the Seinfeld creators Larry David who went on to star in 12 seasons of his own show Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Seinfeld, the “show about nothing, aired from 1989 to 1998. By its final seasons, it was a massive cultural phenomenon with the finale watched by an estimated 76 million viewers. It won 10 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
In Season 7 of Curb Your Enthusiasm (2009) Larry David devised the idea of a Seinfeld reunion that was a “show within a show”.
The storyline, mixing reality with fiction, reunited the entire core cast of Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards and Alexander.
This was what we leant about post-Seinfeld George from that show.
- George became incredibly wealthy by inventing a highly successful smartphone application called the iToilet. However he lost his entire multi-million dollar fortune by investing it all with a fraudster.
- George had married a woman named Amanda, but she left him just before he lost all of his money.
- Having lost his wife and his fortune, George moved into Jerry’s apartment as his roommate. – Newsreel
