Popular Australian plays such as Zig Zag Street, Single Asian Female and Prize Fighter will be revived in a play-reading series at Brisbane’s La Boîte theatre, starting from April 28, 2025.
The series will revive 10 iconic Australian favourites from the archives of La Boîte to celebrate its 100-year history.
Over 10 weeks, for one night only each week, audiences will experience these much-loved works brought to life once more at Australia’s oldest continuously running professional theatre company.
Like a book club for theatre lovers, the intimate La Boîte Encores series reunites original cast members and directors alongside emerging Brisbane talent, offering a unique journey through La Boite’s rich history.
La Boîte Artistic Director and CEO Courtney Stewart said the series was a celebration of Australia’s rich artistic history, and a tribute to the trailblazing works that have shaped the company.
“This play reading series brings iconic productions back to the stage, inviting new audiences to experience the stories that have defined La Boîte over the years,” Ms Stewart said.
“Notably, four former La Boîte Artistic Directors – Sue Rider, Sean See, David Berthold, Todd MacDonald – return to direct key works, adding to the celebration of the company’s legacy.”
The series opens on April 28 with In Beauty it is Finished by George Landen Dann, a play that sparked controversy long before its 1931 premiere due to its candid language and groundbreaking portrayal of a relationship between a young white woman and an Aboriginal man.
Other plays include The Matilda Women (May 6), X-Stacy (May 12), Black Chicks Talking (May 19) Zig Zag Street (May 26), The Narcissist (June 2), Boy Girl Wall (June 9), Holding the Man (June 12), Prize Fighter (June 23), and Single Asian Female (July 1).
