Rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar will arrive in Brisbane in June next year.

Promoters announced today the awarding-winning Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber production would play at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, with general tickets on sale December 13.

Leading the cast in the classic rock opera are international recording artist Michael Paynter as Jesus, Javon King, who played Seaweed J. Stubbs in last year’s Australian tour of Hairspray, as Judas, and soul and blues vocalist Mahalia Barnes as Mary.

Paynter is a member of Australian band Icehouse, as well as the guitarist and vocalist in Jimmy Barnes’ band.

He also performs live with the likes of Bachelor Girl, Killing Heidi, Delta Goodrem and Reece Mastin and has toured extensively in Australia and internationally, sharing arena and stadium stages with artists such as John Farnham, 5 Seconds of Summer, Miley Cyrus, Seal, Hall and Oates, and The Script.

The promoters said internationally acclaimed comedian, singer and writer Reuben Kaye would play Herod in the production, which is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas.
