Brisbane’s iconic animated series Bluey will be made into a feature film.
Queensland Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek said BBC Studios and the Walt Disney Company would elevate Queensland’s beloved blue heeler into a big screen star, with the animated film set to be released in 2027.
Minister Langbroek said the full-length feature film, which will be made in Queensland, will be written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm and continue the adventures of the loveable blue heeler dog and her Mum Chilli, Dad Bandit and little sister Bingo.
He said the film would star the vocal talent from the hit children’s show, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s mum and dad, Chilli and Bandit Heeler, with music to be created by Bluey composer Joff Bush.
“Since its history-making debut on the ABC in 2018, Bluey has become a worldwide hit, gaining millions of fans in more than 140 countries.”
Minister Langbroek said Bluey had won AACTA, BAFTA and Emmy awards, and was recently named as the No. 1 most-watched series of 2024 in the US, with more than 50.5 billion minutes watched so far this year.
“The film is an exciting new chapter for the uniquely Queensland screen success and will be 100 percent made in the State.”
He said the film would create more than 130 local jobs and contribute an estimated $35 million to the state’s economy through local production expenditure.
“Hot on the heels of the opening of Bluey’s World in Brisbane, where fans young and old can experience the Heeler family’s home for real life, this new feature film continues the Bluey series’ tradition of showcasing Queensland’s quintessential lifestyle, culture and environments.”
