Queensland Ballet will premiere three electrifying works set to live music as part of its Triple Bill collection from June 27 – July 5.
Each of the ballets – Gemini, 4Seasons, and A Rhapsody in Motion – will be accompanied by Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra.
Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Ivan Gil-Ortega the performances were chosen for the powerful role music plays in shaping the work.
“Together they offer a rich and immersive theatrical experience – the whole truly greater than the sum of its parts,” Mr Gil-Ortega said.
“From Vivaldi to Rachmaninoff, to a bold new composition inspired by Dvorak, music is the heartbeat of any dance work.
“Camerata’s musicians bring vibrancy and immediacy that elevates the entire experience for our audience.”
Triple Bill is a great introduction for audiences new to ballet, with three unique performances on one night, which range from the contemporary to the classical, and the intimate to the grand.
For longtime ballet fans, it’s an opportunity to witness the talent of 37 Queensland Ballet artists, bringing more than 300 hours of rehearsal to life.
Gemini will premiere for the first time. It has been choreographed by Jack Lister who is known for his cinematic storytelling. The story explores the tension between isolation and socialisation in an atmospheric subterranean world. The original score by Louis Frere-Harvey was inspired by Dvorak’s New World Symphony.
4Seasons, choreographed by Natalie Weir, is a poignant exploration of love and human connection. Set to the sublime music of Vivaldi and Max Richter, the piece showcases Weir’s emotive, lyrical choreography and sensitivity to the human experience.
A Rhapsody in Motion pays homage to the life of the dancer – celebrating the artistry, technique and unspoken dialogue between artist and audience. Choreographed by Greg Horsman, it is set to Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
