With experience spanning over a decade in Catholic education leadership, John Bates brings a wealth of knowledge and a heart full of passion to his new role as principal of St Stephen’s School Algester.

Reflecting on his path to leadership, Mr Bates recalls how his growing interest in the wider school community and encouragement from his colleagues led him to pursue principalship.

“My favourite part about being a principal is building the relationships and connections with families and students,” he said.

“I find the journey we share with our students and their families, from the interview stage to graduation, is incredibly rewarding.

“Guiding students through the ups and downs and seeing the gratitude from their families as they go on to make a positive impact in our world fills me with pride.”

Mr Bates’s vision for St Stephen’s is to foster happy and engaged learners.

“I believe in setting high expectations and providing the necessary support for students to achieve them,” he said.

When speaking about his leadership style, he felt making time for staff and students was of utmost importance.

“Beyond academic achievements, my focus is on the wellbeing of my entire new school community,” he said.

“I want my whole school community to know I am always there and ready to support them.”
