A Salvation Army affordable housing complex in Brisbane’s northern suburbs is in the running for national honours after winning a State development award.

The 4-level 26-unit complex in Chermside is the Queensland winner of the Property Council’s 2024 Rider Levett Bucknall Development of the Year award.

Property Council Chief Executive Mike Zorbas said the awards were a pathway to the National Innovation & Excellence Awards, which will be announced in Sydney in September.

Mr Zorbas said the awards celebrated groundbreaking innovations and outstanding leadership in Australia’s property industry, with State and Territory winners now contenders for Australian Development of the Year award.

Award judges said the Salvos complex, which is located near transport, schools, healthcare and a shopping centre, boasted community areas, vibrant communal gardens, landscaping, interactive play areas, administration offices and basement parking.

It is up against other State winners, including Quay Quarter Tower, a pioneering vertical village in News South Wales and Australia’s first state-of-the-art specialist cardiac hospital, The Victorian Heart Hospital.

“These awards throw a dazzling spotlight on the role community-defining projects play in shaping vibrant, sustainable and forward-looking cities,” Mr Zorbas said.
