Amanda Stoker has been appointed Queensland Minister for Families, Seniors and Disability Services and Minister for Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence.
She replaces Amanda Camm who stepped down from the role last week, citing health issues.
Ms Camm had faced months of pressure over a string of controversies in her portfolio.
She said “ongoing stresses” and a medical issue has driven her decision to resign.
Ms Stoker has a legal background, serving at the private bar, where she practiced in commercial law, administrative law and corporate crime.
As an Australian Senator, she served as Assistant Minister to the Attorney-General, Assistant Minister for Industrial Relations and Assistant Minister for Women, as well as chair of the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee, and deputy chair of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee.
Natalie Marr has been appointed into the role of Assistant Minister of Finance, Trade, Employment and Training.
Premier David Crisafulli said Ms Stoker was stepping in to continue delivering critical reform for better protection of children and victims of crime.
“She will implement the Government’s response to the Commission of Inquiry, with fewer children in residential care and more in foster care and adoption,” he said.
“Equally, Amanda’s priorities will be refining our nation-leading domestic and family violence laws, rolling out the perpetrator electronic monitoring pilot across the State and delivering more support for victims of domestic and family violence.”
