Award-winning play Counting and Cracking will have its Queensland debut at the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2027.

The play has won the Helpmann Award seven times, including Best Play.

It was named the best Australian play of the 21st century by more than 100 theatre professionals.

The story revolves around S. Shaktihidharan returning to Sri Lanka for the first time since leaving as a baby and being handed a shoebox of letters written by his great-grandfather.

Inside was a family history he’d never been told, and “the beginnings of one of the most celebrated Australian plays ever written”.

“Spanning four generations and five decades, this sweeping story of love, political strife, home and exile asks what we owe the past, and what we’re allowed to leave behind.”

Counting and Cracking is being presented in association with Queensland Theatre Company.

It will be presented at the Brisbane Powerhouse from May 27 to June 6, 2027.
