Queensland is the number one performing economy in Australia, coming out on top because of its strength in business, housing and labour market investment.

The latest CommBank State of the State report has placed Queensland as the leader, overtaking Western Australia for the June quarter of 2026, and moving up three places in just one year.

Queensland’s top result reflects its broad-based strength, with the state ranking in the top three nationally on five of the six economic indicators.

Dwelling investment was the standout, rising 16.8 percent for the year – the strongest growth in the country – while business investment increased nine percent.

CommBank economist Harry Ottley said Queensland’s economic expansion had increasingly shifted towards investment.

“Queensland’s rise to number one is about consistency, rather than one single stand-out result, with dwelling and business investment now doing more of the heavy lifting,” Mr Ottley said.

The CommBank State of the States report compares the economic performance of Australia’s eight states and territories using six equally weighted indicators.
