The Get Smart franchise, which began as a 1960s television cult comedy, is set to be rebooted by Warner Bros.
The original series, starring Don Adams, ran from 1965 to 1970 and the concept was adapted for the big screen in 2008, with Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99.
Variety said this week that actor John Mulaney was expected to play Maxwell Smart in the next film.
It said Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote Now You See Me: Now You Don’t was expected to write the screenplay.
The original TV series, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, ran for 138 episodes and followed the bumbling antics of Agent Smart as he battled the evil KAOS complete with a an impractical shoe phone and dysfunctional “cone of silence”.
The show, which was repeated on afternoon television for decades, brought phrases like “missed it by that much”, “sorry about that chief” and “would you believe…” into everyday language.
Along with Don Adams, who won three Emmy awards for his performance, Barbara Feldon played Agent 99 and Edward Platt played the Chief of the Control agency.
John Mulaney’s most recent starring role was as the host of Netflix’s anti-talk show Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney in 2025.
