South-East Queensland has two new reminders that the Games will be held in Brisbane in 2032.
The countdown to the Brisbane 2032 Games has officially launched in the city’s Queen Street Mall with the unveiling of a giant digital OMEGA clock.
And in Moreton Bay a giant nine metre replica of the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games Matilda winking kangaroo has been unveiled on the eve of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The replica called Milly is at The Mill Water Park in Petrie, next to the future Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre Olympic venue and is part of the city’s symbolic connection to the Olympic event.
In the Queen Street Mall, the landmark clock signals Brisbane’s shift from winning the Games to building a legacy during the next six years and beyond.
While recent Olympic and Paralympic countdown clocks have typically been unveiled a year out from the Games, Brisbane marked the significant milestone with early installation of the official public countdown.
OMEGA Countdown Clocks have been recognised symbols of the excitement and anticipation that builds before the games for more than 90 years.
The clock also serves as a reminder of OMEGA’s longstanding role as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, a partnership the brand has held since 1932.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said residents would be able to watch the countdown to the biggest event in the city’s history when they visited the Queen Street Mall.
“This clock isn’t just counting down the days until the Games. It’s counting down to the next chapter in Brisbane’s story,” Mr Schrinner said.
Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris said the city had achieved a lot to date and there was plenty more to be delivered together.
Swimmer and 14-time Olympic gold medallist Emma McKeon said the Countdown Clock made everything feel more real.
