Former Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has been appointed as Chair of the Australian Multicultural Council.
The Australian Multicultural Council provides independent advice to the Australian Government on matters affecting Australia’s multicultural communities.
It supports efforts to strengthen social cohesion, inclusion and participation across society.
Mr Gutwein’s appointment takes effect from July 20, 2026.
Federal Minister for Multicultural Affairs Anne Aly said she looked forward to working with Mr Gutwein “as he leads the Council in supporting an inclusive Australia where everyone has the opportunity to thrive”.
“I thank Simon Chan AM for his leadership and service as Interim Chair during this transition period, and acknowledge the contribution of Christine Castley OAM, whose dedication and leadership have helped advance multiculturalism in Australia,” Dr Aly said.
“At a time when social cohesion is more important than ever, the Council’s work helps ensure that people of all backgrounds feel valued, connected and able to contribute to Australia’s future.”
