A major contract has been awarded to kick off the next stage of the Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI) on the Sunshine Coast.
The Queensland Government has announced that McIlwain Civil Engineering and SEE Civil Joint Venture will deliver the works.
This includes major earthworks and embankment construction to prepare the site for the full interchange upgrade.
The contract involves the removal of tens of thousands of tonnes of material.
It will reshape the interchange in preparation for The Wave Stage 3 (Metro) and improve traffic flow through one of the Coast’s busiest “pinch points”.
The government has also released new maps of The Wave (Stage 3) that runs between the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Mountain Creek.
The Wave Stage 3 will deliver a “high-capacity, high-frequency metro-style service connecting key growth areas, major employment hubs and essential services across the Sunshine Coast”.
“Investigations are continuing for the corridor north of Mountain Creek through to Maroochydore CBD and the Sunshine Coast Airport, with final corridor details expected in 2027 as planning accelerates for the next stage of the project,” the government said.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the upgrade was critical to uplifting safety for thousands of motorists every day.
“Both the Mooloolah River Interchange and The Wave will reduce congestion, improve safety and support a high-frequency metro system that connects people to jobs, health care and education,” he said.
