Ergon Energy Network and Energex have started recruitment for 125 new apprentices to start in February 2027.
The jobs will be based in metropolitan, rural and remote areas. Applications close later this month.
Apprentice program development coordinator Jeremey Bailey said the energy organisations received about 7500 applications for apprenticeships last year.
He said they were looking for people with potential. Training and tools were provided as part of the jobs.
“You do need to do some homework – we appreciate it when people do their research on our website and take a genuine interest in the trade and location they’re applying for,” Mr Bailey said.
“This is a career opportunity you don’t want to miss, with generous pay and conditions, world-class training, and a commitment to your health and safety.”
Ergon and Energex are encouraging applicants to consider lesser-known trades, like distribution or transmission linesperson and communications technician.
They are also encouraging interest in depots outside Queensland’s major centres.
“Sixty percent of our apprentice intake for 2027 will be in rural or remote locations, so by thinking outside the square you can improve your chances of securing an apprenticeship with extra allowances and leave,” Mr Bailey said.
“We understand the temptation to go for what you know and we see hundreds of people applying to be an apprentice electrician in the city while there’s not as much competition for roles outside the major hubs.
“Whether you grew up in the country and want to stay close to home or you have a sense of adventure and you’re looking for a change of scenery, it’s worth exploring the range of options we are offering.”
Brisbane-based apprentice distribution linesperson Brad Sweeney says he is glad he applied a second time because he cannot think of a better job.
“I came from military and what really attracted me to Energex was that team-based work, learning a vast number of skills and working in different locations every day,” he said.
“I’ve also got a young family and Energex offers a great work-life balance with a 9-day fortnight.”
