This Easter the community at St Kevin’s School, Geebung have created a message of hope by raising $25,000 for Shave for a Cure.
Twelve students and three staff gathered to shave or cut their hair this week to support families affected by cancer, including one of their own students who was recently impacted by the disease.
Assistant Principal Religious Education Kristin Byrne said the fundraiser was a deeply personal event that bought the whole school community together.
“In late 2025, one of our Year 1 students, Elliot was diagnosed with cancer and that news touched every part of our school community,” Ms Byrne said.
“As a close-knit school community, we wanted to find a way we could stand together in solidarity with the family during this difficult time.
“Shave for a Cure gave us the opportunity to show our support in a very visible and compassionate way, reminding the family that they are surrounded by care, prayer and hope.”
Ms Byrne said that her students had shown extraordinary compassion and determination throughout the fundraiser.
“We have had numerous families within our community touched by cancer over the past few years and the way our community wraps its arms around them is a beautiful example of what I like to say is Catholicity in action,” Ms Byrne said.
“It is also a testament to our shared values of compassion, generosity and care for one another.”
The school initially set a goal to raise $2500, but students and their families have exceeded this outcome, raising a total of over $25,000 so far.
Student Elliott’s battle with cancer
Year One student Elliott was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour in August 2025, aged five, after complaints of a sore stomach. He underwent a seven-hour surgery to remove the tumour, as well as his left kidney and surrounding lymph nodes. He is currently undergoing 27 weeks of intensive chemotherapy, which has taken a toll on his body and immune system, including the loss of his hair. He and his family have endured several ups and downs during his journey and he is looking forward to getting back to school and socialising with his friends again.
