The Queensland Government has confirmed funding of $4 million to investigate a new Bremer River crossing in Ipswich, west of Brisbane.
The city currently relies on the David Trumpy Bridge as its only inner-city crossing.
The $4 million will fund a Detailed Business Case for a possible new bridge. Ipswich City Council has already completed the Preliminary and Strategic Business Cases.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the Government was delivering on a key election commitment for the people of Ipswich.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said a second inner city river crossing had been on the Ipswich community’s wish list for more than a decade.
“We welcome the Queensland Government’s commitment of $4 million to deliver a detailed business case, and today’s announcement marking the commencement of this important project,” Mayor Harding said.
“The second crossing will play a critical role in improving flood immunity and strengthening the resilience of our transport network.
“It will help unlock the full potential of our CBD by diverting unnecessary through-traffic and easing congestion on the existing David Trumpy Bridge.”
