Australia has won its first gold medal of the Winter Olympic with Cooper Woods taking out the men’s moguls in a nail-biting finish.

Woods was in top form throughout the competition, with a Qualification 2 score of 80.46 before recording a score of 83.60 to top the first final.

Woods produced an even better score of 83.71 to take the gold.

He finished with an identical score to Canadian Mikael Kingsbury but was awarded the gold based on cleaner turns in the competition.

Japan’s Akuma Horishima took bronze.

Cooper, 25, known as “Coop”, was born in Cooma in New South Wales and currently lives in Pambula Beach in the southern coastal area of the state.

“I’ve struggled with a lot of self-belief. I’ve had such a good year of training but not competing, and what a time to get it dialled and sorted, when the pressure is at its max,” Woods said after his win.

The win is Australia’s 20th Winter Olympic medal in the history of the games.
