Shakespeare’s most gripping tragedy, Macbeth, will be re-told by acclaimed production house Shake & Stir in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

The Brisbane-based company began in 2006 when three actor friends united in their love of adapting and performing Shakespeare.

The production, at the QPAC Playhouse from June 6 to June 26, 2026, will remain faithful to the bard’s text, but has been given a contemporary adaption which charts the course of a rising war hero who becomes a media sensation.

Directed by Nick Skubij, adapted by Nelle Lee and produced by Ross Balbuziente, the production is billed as a “dark, seductive, ratings-driven descent where perception is everything, and one couple’s hunger for the top spot threatens to bring their whole empire crashing down.”

The new Macbeth had been created for a media savvy 2026 audience, Mr Skubij said in a statement.

“Through the amplification, re-framing and live broadcasting of Shakespeare’s classic, we will interrogate how misinformation, fear and persuasion drive contemporary power and reveal what happens when the story becomes more powerful than reality.”

More than 330,000 people have visited QPAC to see a Shake & Stir show since 2011, including hit adaptations like Roald Dahl’s The Twits and the Green Day Broadway show American Idiot, QPAC Chief Executive Rachel Healy said in a statement.
