Queenslanders are catching public transport more often, with the number of trips up 21 percent to 200 million in the past year across South-East Queensland.
The government has attributed the hike to 50 cent fares which represent a government subsidy of $423 million.
Public transport patronage has increased 22 percent in Brisbane, 20 percent on the Gold and Sunshine coasts, and 24 percent in Moreton Bay, according to a statement released today by the Queensland Government.
“A family of four living in Caboolture with one parent commuting to the city for work and two children taking the bus to school saves more than $3500 a year,” Transport and Main Roads Minster Brent Mickelberg said.
“A worker travelling by train from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, four days a week is saving more than $4200 a year.”
