The revitalisation of New South Wales’ coastal gateway into  Queensland is underway, with designs approved for the first building to be constructed in the planned Southern Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads.

Associate Director of architectural practice Turner Claire Malin said River Terrace, a mixed-use development being built for Briscoe Hotel Group, would set the architectural standard for the entire precinct, which was expected to transform the border city.

Ms Malin said creating an outstanding entry statement for the city centre of Tweed Heads had been a great challenge.

She said due to its key gateway location and scale, the 72-apartment River Terrace had to meet rigorous criteria encompassing aesthetic, environmental and site-specific aspects of the design.

“Tweed Heads sits on the threshold between New South Wales and Queensland.

“The project’s prominent location at one of the main entry points into the Tweed Heads city centre meant that it had to meet the specific Design Excellence Guideline established by the Tweed Shire Council before it could be approved.”

Ms Malin said the region was well known for its laidback lifestyle, with locals valuing their connection to the outdoors, and River Terrace responded to their needs.

“The building is only one apartment deep, enhancing its slender sculptural quality as an iconic landmark building as well as supporting our goals of achieving 100 percent natural cross-ventilation in every apartment,” she said.

“They all will have individual entry points, harbour or hinterland views, and spaces to store essentials such as surfboards and bicycles.”

Ms Malin said River Terrace would integrate with the future vision to revitalise the Southern Boat Harbour Precinct and the city centre through waterside walkways and paths, encouraging waterfront activities and maritime connections to the boat harbour.
