Acting legend Noni Hazelhurst stars in a one-woman show where she wrestles with a lifetime of bittersweet memories in a small pub slated for demolition.
The Lark is where 75-year-old Rose Grey (Hazelhurst) says her final farewell to the building where she spent her entire life in rapidly gentrifying inner-city Melbourne.
The derelict building was once her childhood home which she inherited from her retired father.
Rose tries to embrace human experiences of the inevitability of change, to move on from the past, and make peace with her grief.
The Lark was written specifically for Hazelhurst by Australian playwright Daniel Keene, and is directed by Matt Scholten.
They are the creative team responsible for her award-winning role of Mother, for which she won the Matilda Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
Hazelhurst said the chance to collaborate again on The Lark was “a miracle,”
“No actor could ask for more because the opportunity to work with Daniel and Matt on creating Mother was a rare privilege and a joy.”
Hazlehurst has starred in A Place to Call Home, and undertaken supporting roles in Australian films such as Monkey Grip, Little Fish and Candy. She has been a presenter for Play School and Better Homes and Gardens.
She holds a Member of the Order of Australia for her services to children and the performing arts, and has won numerous Logie and Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.
The Lark will premiere in Queensland at QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre from October 15-26, 2025.
