The essence of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is being revealed with warmth and unity at its heart.
Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris teased the outcome of a public consultation on the Games Vision at a Committee for Brisbane event yesterday.
“Warmth, hospitality, openness, unity. We’re getting that sort of feedback,” he told the crowd.
Mr Liveris said the Games didn’t need an iconic landmark to build an image of the Games.
“We don’t need the Eiffel Tower. It’s not the physical landmarks. It’s actually us. It’s (Queenslanders). That’s the brand.”
That feeling was reinforced with the release today, exactly seven years before the opening ceremony, of all the initial findings of the consultation process.
Mr Liveris said the initial themes across all the stakeholder groups were that the Games Vision needed to evoke unity and belonging and set a platform for excellence and ambition, while delivering long-term benefits with purpose.
He said more than 6000 participants generated over 1300 ideas towards delivering a meaningful vision.
“I’ve been blown away by the eagerness of so many Australians and those around the world to have their say on the themes our collective Games Vision should include,” Mr Liveris said.
He said feedback was captured through an online survey or in-person sessions, with more than 37 stakeholder groups represented spanning Games and athlete representatives, First Nations peoples, Government and associated agencies, education sectors and universities, community interest bodies across disability, LGBTQIA+, environment and more.
“Every Games has a vision that not only binds hundreds of nations and thousands of athletes together, but is a unique statement and narrative to the world about the hosts.
“We are a warm and welcoming people, with incredible natural landscapes and home to the world’s oldest continuing living culture, not to mention our deep passion for sport.
“The opportunity to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 is a gift that will catapult Brisbane, Queensland and Australia onto the world stage, bringing with it economic and social benefits to last generations.”
Mr Liveris said that Games Vision consultation would be finalised in the coming weeks, before ideas were distilled and a final vision unveiled by the end of the year.
He said the “brand and emblems” would be ready next year.
