Thaiday happy to see broncos busted in latest gig

North Queensland icon Sam Thaiday will shine a light on Indigenous rodeo talent as the inaugural Ambassador for the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo Championships.

The former Kangaroo, Queensland and Brisbane Broncos rugby league star will add star power to the event, from August 8-10, which features the Indigenous Rodeo Championships on the final day.

Mount Isa Mines Rodeo Community Chair Mark Thompson said the Sydney-born, but Townsville-raised legend was one of Australia’s most recognisable sports stars, best known for his 304-game career with the Brisbane Broncos, and representing Queensland in 29 State of Origin matches and Australia in 34 internationals.

“Sam brings his passion, influence, and deep connection to community to the event, celebrating the Indigenous contribution to Australia’s rodeo culture,” Mr Thompson said.

Mr Thaiday said he was passionate about celebrating Indigenous Australians.

“As the first-ever ambassador for the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships, I’m incredibly proud to stand alongside the incredible Indigenous cowboys, cowgirls, and communities who make this event so special,” he said.

“Rodeo is about grit, heart, and heritage—and the Indigenous Rodeo Championships showcases the best of that spirit.”
