Australians are among citizens from a large number of countries who lack confidence in the leadership of President Donald Trump, as the global image of the United State declines.
In new data released by American think tank Pew Research Centre, 77 percent of Australians said they had no confidence in President Trump, the same level as one of the States’ closest neighbours, Canada.
Of the 24 countries surveyed#, only Nigeria (79 percent), Israel (69 percent), Kenya 64 (percent), Hungary (53 percent) and India (52 percent) had a majority of citizens who were confident with President Trump’s leadership of world affairs.
The most negative country was the US’s southern neighbour, Mexico, where 91 percent of those surveyed had no confidence in the President.
Others, including Australia and Canada, who had more than three quarters of the population register a lack of confidence were Sweden (85 percent), Germany (81 percent), Spain (80 percent), Turkey (80 percent), France (78 percent) and Netherlands (77 percent).
The remaining countries, Italy (68 percent), South Korea (67 percent), Greece (63 percent), Argentina (62 percent), Indonesia (62 percent), United Kingdom (62 percent), Brazil (61 percent), Japan (61 percent), Poland (60 percent) and South Africa (54 percent) all showed a majority indicating a lack of confidence.
“Majorities in most countries also express little or no confidence in Trump’s ability to handle specific issues, including immigration, the Russia-Ukraine war, U.S.-China relations, global economic problems, conflicts between Israel and its neighbors, and climate change,” the report stated.
It stated when asked about Trump’s personal characteristics, most described him as arrogant and dangerous, while relatively few saw him as honest.
“Still, majorities in 18 countries consider Trump a strong leader,” the report stated.
It found, in most nations, views about Trump differed sharply along ideological and partisan lines.
“People who place themselves on the right and those who have favourable views of right-wing populist parties in Europe tend to view Trump more favourably.”
It found overall ratings of the United States had declined in 15 nations since last spring, including drops of 20 percentage points or more in Mexico, Sweden, Poland and Canada.
