Out of the Box Festival returns after seven years

It’s spent seven years inside the box, but now the Out of the Box Festival is being released with a six-day extravaganza comeback from June 17-22.

First launched in 1992, the fun-loving Festival is aimed at children aged less than eight, and will feature theatre experiences, workshops, free events and activities at all of the venues at QPAC, with additional programs at the State Library, Queensland Museum and QAGOMA.

This year’s theme is Hope and children are invited to use their imagination to draw an artwork of something they are hopeful for, then add it to the branches of a growing tree at the State Library from now until June 23.

Highlights from the Out of the Box Festival program include:

The Gruffalo is a musical adaptation of the classic picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler at the Lyric Theatre.

Wolfgang in the Stars sees boy-genius Wolfgang Armadeus Mozart embark on an interstellar journey to seek inspiration from a cast of quirky characters for his beloved masterpiece Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at the Concert Hall.

Make your own Bluey inspired puppet and bring it to life in a playful and interactive puppetry demonstration at the Bluey Puppetry Workshop at the Playhouse Balcony Foyer.

Where is the Green Sheep is based on the beloved children’s book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek at the Playhouse.

Professional chef Luisa Scrimshaw will lead Little Chefs, a hands-on cooking workshop where your child can make something delicious for their lunchbox and learn about the Food Rainbow at the Lyrebird Restaurant.

Gurril Storm Bird is the story of a young boy who came face to face with the rainbow serpent, and adapted from the prize-winning children’s picture book by Trevor (Bumi) Fourmile at the Cremorne Theatre.

Club Origami is an interactive dance show which invites family audiences to create, imagine, and explore new ways of thinking, playing and moving at Tony Gould Gallery.

The Lost Lending Library is an immersive and intimate experience to discover the largest collection of books in the world celebrating stories and the awe-inspiring journeys they take us on at the Playhouse Band Room.

Learn about mindfulness for enjoyment, mental wellbeing and self-regulation with teacher/artist/performer Lucinda Shaw in the Mindful Me Health & Wellbeing Workshop designed for children at the Concert Hall Balcony Foyer.
