A permanent reminder of the Matildas’ magic moment at the 2023 Women’s Football World Cup has been unveiled at Suncorp Stadium.
The cast bronze bas relief, measuring 5.5m wide and 2.1m high, has been placed near the southern entrance to the stadium, depicting the moment the team won its quarterfinal against France at Suncorp Stadium in August last year.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles said the unveiling coincided with the announcement the Matildas’ first matches back in Queensland since the World Cup will be a two-match international series against Paris Olympic silver medallists Brazil in Brisbane and the Gold Coast later this year.
Premier Miles said the permanent tribute to the Matildas, created by Brisbane-based Urban Art Projects, was in recognition of the team’s on-field efforts as well as their social impact.
He said Suncorp Stadium was the backdrop for so many of the Matildas’ sensational moments at the World Cup, including the quarterfinal win over France.
“It’s fitting that now their success will be immortalised where the action happened.
“It’s important that we recognise the outstanding achievement of the Matildas for the next generation – inspiring more women and girls to get involved in football.
“The next time you’re at Suncorp, visit this incredible tribute and feel the enduring pride to be an Australian.”
That next time may be the Matildas v Brazil match which is scheduled for Thursday, November 28. The second match in the series is on Sunday, December 1 at Cbus Super Stadium, on the Gold Coast.
