Queensland Ballet’s sister company, the Shanghai Ballet will perform a glittering tale of Parisian love and tragedy in the Lady of the Camellias.

The 1848 tale of forbidden love and tragedy by French author Alexandre Dumas fils has inspired countless stage, operatic and film productions, including Baz Luhrmann’s the musical Moulin Rouge, and Verdi’s opera La Traviata.

The semi-autobiographical story was inspired by 19th-century courtesan Marie Duplessis, who had a brief love affair with Dumas. The novel tells the tragic love story between fictional characters Marguerite Gautier, regarded as the most beautiful and brazen courtesan in Paris who is known as The Lady of the Camellias as she is never seen without her favourite flower; and Armand Duval, a young and handsome bourgeois. The two embark on a passionate romance that ends in tragedy.

The ballet features sumptuous choreography, exquisite set designs and elegant costumes.

It was created by distinguished British choreographer Derek Deane OBE (Strictly Gershwin). Music by American composer Carl Davis will transport audiences to Paris.

Shanghai Ballet was founded more than 40 years ago, and is renowned for its classic masterpieces, contemporary ballets, and Chinese historical dance dramas.

In a season exclusive to Brisbane, The Lady of the Camellias is a celebration of literature, love, and art told through the artform of lyrical dance.

It runs from December 5-8 at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC. For tickets, click here.
